Typology of Legislation (ILPF surveys):

• “Prescriptive approach”: limited to use of digital signatures within a public key infrastructure (e.g., Argentina, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Utah)
• “Two-tier approach”: basic legal benefits for all electronic authentication mechanisms, but broader benefits for “approved” technologies (e.g., Illinois, Singapore)
• “Minimalist approach”: no detailed standards, focuses on granting basic legal recognition (e.g., Australian initiatives, many US state laws)
