Ana Palacio is a Member of the Board of the Madrid Bar Association, a Member of the Spanish Delegation to the Council of the Bars and Law Societies of the European Community and an Honorary Member of the Bar of England and Wales (Temple´s Inn). She is a Member of the Arbitration Court of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and President of the Governing Board of the Academy of European Law, Trier (ERA)
An MEP since 1994, she is currently Chairman of the Legal Affairs and Internal Market Committee and Chairman of the Conference of Committee Chairmen.
Mrs. Palacio has been European Parliament rapporteur of the electronic commerce Directive and has actively taken part in the work done in the European Parliament during the last legislature in the area of internal market and new technologies; in particular, on the data bases directive, the directive on certain aspects of intellectual property and copyright, the general directive on data protection and the directive on data protection on the field of telecommunications. During this legislature, she has been responsible for the EPP group for the Safe Harbor US-EU agreement as well as The Hague Conference on Private International Law negotiations on jurisdiction, recognition and enforcement of judgements in civil and commercial matters and the EU negotiations on the same field.
Ana Palacio has degrees in political science, sociology and law with honours.
