Rebecca J. Whitener

Director, Security and Privacy Services

Rebecca Whitener is the director of EDS Privacy Services. Prior to joining EDS, Ms. Whitener was a founder and the Chief Operating Officer of Fiderus - a company focusing entirely on services and solutions for security and privacy. Ms. Whitener came to Fiderus from IBM Global Services, where she was a principal responsible for the worldwide privacy service offerings. Building the IBM privacy services from initial concept to formation of methodology, she trained and mentored consultants, and developed business solutions for clients. She has worked with major companies around the world, including health care and financial services, to help develop solutions for the management of customer data and other information assets.

Previous to IBM, Ms. Whitener had an extensive background in auditing, management, academia and consulting. As a Director of Internal Audit, she supervised and conducted fraud investigations and computer security incidents. In the early 90's, she became one of the first auditing professionals to recognize the important connection between information security and privacy and to introduce privacy concepts at both national and international security conferences. Her background also includes undergraduate university teaching in accounting and graduate teaching in the Master's in Health Care Administration program at a large state university.

A recognized authority in security and privacy solutions, Ms. Whitener was appointed in 2000 to the Federal Trade Commission Advisory Committee for Online Access and Security. She developed and taught workshops for the MIS Training Institute, led a number of workshops for the North Carolina Association of CPAs, and has presented on information security and privacy topics at numerous seminars and international conferences. She has authored articles for professional publications and is a recipient of the Outstanding Discussion Leader Award from the North Carolina Association of CPAs. Ms. Whitener holds an MBA, a B.S. in accounting and a B.A. in psychology. She is a certified public accountant, certified information systems auditor, certified internal auditor and certified fraud examiner.
